Mozambique’s extractive-industry development model is a textbook case of how enormous FDI funds derived from its rich mineral base have not been leveraged to   promote inclusive economic growth and generate food security for all. It is a textbook case of the resource curse.  Instead, only a few have benefitted, leaving the poor and vulnerable, who constitute the vast majority, to struggle unassisted. These include smallholders in subsistence-oriented agriculture ...

In October 2026, Brazil will elect its president. What will be the impact of these elections nationally, regionally, and internationally? Who are the main presidential candidates, and what are their agendas? What are the main challenges facing Brazil over the coming years? These are the questions that this Policy Brief seeks to ans ...

The author of this opinion, Chaimae Bourjij, is a 2019 alumna of the Atlantic Dialogues Emerging Leaders Program. An election result tells only part of a country’s political story. The rules that turn votes into seats also shape which voices reach Parliament, how local interests are represented, and whether any party can claim a clear mandate. Morocco’s 2026 vote invites this wider reading: not only who came first, but how the electoral framework distributes political ...

Aircraft carriers are massive and menacing, carrying dozens of aircraft and thousands of naval personnel, supported by an escort of warships and supply vessels. Ships such as the USS Gerald R. Ford are formidable symbols of military power. Yet even these giants can be surpassed in length by the largest cruise ships, including Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas, introduced in 2026. The 365-meter Legend is approximately 32 meters longer than the Gerald R. Ford and can accommoda ...

Since the early 2000s, the Moroccan labour market has experienced continuous educational expansion that has not been matched by an equivalent transformation of the economy's productive structure, giving rise to situations of vertical mismatch between employed workers' education levels and the requirements of the jobs they hold. This study analyzes the determinants of overeducation and undereducation using anonymized microdata from the 2014 General Population and Housing Census (RGPH ...

It is a biblical scene: the massive Philistine warrior Goliath, standing nine feet tall and heavily armed, faces the young shepherd David, who brings down the giant against all odds, overcoming fear and demonstrating courage in the face of brute size and raw power. This metaphor resonates with a reality unfolding in America today: high tech versus the people. ...

Amid overlapping health, geopolitical, economic, technological and climate crises, young people in the North and South are evolving in distinct environments that are progressively converging toward a shared set of concerns. Despite differing levels of development and historical trajectories, they face similar challenges: growing uncertainty about the future, difficulties entering the labor market, complex access to housing, fragile mental health, territorial inequalities and ecologi ...

This paper was originaly published on Middle East Development Journal This article examines the impact of remittances on human capital formation, living conditions, and economic participation of women in North African countries. Ethiopia continues to struggle to lay the economic foundations of food security for all, more than 30 years after first adopting the East Asian Developmental State Model (EADS) under Zenawi (1911-2012), continued under Hailemariam Desalegn (2012-April 2018), and later shifting toward a neo-liberal, Washington consensus-oriented approach under Abiy Ahmed (2018-present). The achievements recorded under the EADS approach—particularly double-digit annual growth, substantial poverty ...

The term “K-shaped recovery” was introduced to describe the economic recovery from the recession triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic. It refers to the uneven and divergent growth pattern between leading industries or sectors (the upper arm of the letter K—mainly the high-technology sector) and laggards, or the rest of the economy (the lower arm—the traditional industries). Since then the term has become popular in portraying divergent growth patterns within and between countries, esp ...

Is Europe Prepared for War?European public opinion is moving from treating a major conflict as unthinkable to regarding it as a possibility for which governments must prepare. Attention is increasingly focused on Russian hybrid operations, vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure and the risk of fragmentation within NATO. European defence policy is consequently undergoing a rapid transition from post-Cold War complacency towards preparations for high-intensity warfare. Recent ...

We Are Watching You In April 2026, the UK Ministry of Defence revealed that it had tracked a covert Russian submarine operation apparently intended to map critical undersea cables and pipelines in the North Atlantic and the North Sea. A Russian attack submarine and two specialised intelligence vessels operated by the Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research, commonly known as GUGI, were reportedly monitored for four weeks by the Royal Navy, including HMS St Albans and P-8 Poseidon ...

The rise of generative artificial intelligence technologies is profoundly reshaping the dynamics of disinformation on a global scale. On the African continent, this development is unfolding against a particularly tense backdrop: accelerating digital adoption, persistent institutional vulnerabilities, and an unprecedented series of elections. Synthetic disinformation—deepfakes, automated content, coordinated campaigns—is not an isolated phenomenon there, but acts as a multiplier of p ...

(BAD, 2020 ; Mo Ibrahim ...

Globally, public policies for youth face a twofold challenge: addressing structural socioeconomic challenges—such as unemployment, precariousness, and regional disparities—while accommodating a growing demand for effective civic participation. (ILO, 2023; United Nations, 2020) In Africa, this challenge takes on a unique dimension given the demographic weight of the youth population and the persistent fragility of local democracies. (AfDB, 2020; Mo Ibrahim Foundation, 2023)Elections ...

In Morocco, the issue of young NEETs (Not in Employment, Education, or Training) is a national emergency, fueled by 300,000 students dropping out of school each year. In response to this challenge, the “New Generation Second Chance School” (E2C-NG) model has proven its effectiveness by achieving an exceptional employment rate of 81%.However, this institutional success rests entirely on a local network of organizations that is now under strain. A previously unpublished analysis of da ...

Three years after the adoption of the first National Action Plan (NAP) on the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda, Morocco has made real institutional progress, but implementation is still inadequate. The extension of the NAP opens a window of opportunity to prepare a second, more ambitious and operational cycle. This Policy Brief identifies four persistent obstacles: a virtually stagnant female employment rate of 19.1%, less than 3% female representation in peacekeeping contingen ...

It is a golden object—shining, impressive, 36.8 centimeters tall, crafted from 18-carat gold and bronze. A replica of a monumental four-meter-high work of art standing in Geneva’s Ariana Park, near the United Nations Office, it bears the title Reflections and Dreams, created by Azerbaijani artists Salhab Mammadov and Ali Ibadullayev. Hands rise from the earth, supporting a globe, reaching toward eternity. ...

In 2017, eight scientists from the Google research team published in the journal Advances in Neural Info Processing Systems the remarkable article “Attention is all you need,” which introduced a Transformer neural network architecture. The paper has been cited over 173,000 times and ranks among the top 100 most cited papers of the 21st century. It builds on the attention principle introduced in 2014 by Bahdanau, Cho and Turing Award winner Bengio, who proposed neural machine transla ...

Closing Morocco's gender employment gap could increase GDP per capita by 40-50 percent; yet female labor force participation stands at just 19 percent—among the lowest in the world and still declining. This policy paper argues that investing in the care economy is not merely a social expenditure, but a productive economic strategy with measurable returns. Drawing on international evidence from Uruguay, Mexico, Colombia, and India, the brief demonstrates that well-designed care syste ...
