Digital advances have greatly impacted all facets of the world that surrounds us, be it through the way we conduct business, produce and manufacture, interact with each other, or even wage war. The outbreak that led to today’s pandemic of COVID-19 is a prime example of how intricately connected our world is. The Policy Center for the New South is mobilizing its resources on understanding these new and shifting dynamics, endeavoring to help the research effort in Morocco, Africa, and worldwide during these uncertain times. « Passionate, Black, visionary » Ana Paula Barreto talks about serious matters with great calm, taking time to reflect before answering questions, from New York. Born in Jardim Angela, a poor area of São Paulo, considered as the most dangerous neighbourhood in the world by the United Nations in 1996, she remembers the violence of the favelas. She doesn’t want to reduce her childhood « in a joyful family » to « the ugly », but one of her strongest memories is seeing the bodies of pe ...

Reputation, a key concept, if any, is an indicator of the esteem granted to a natural person but also to a company or a state entity. Consisting of a sum of perceptions, it is the overall outcome of a set of images, appreciations of actions and behaviors. Thus, the good reputation of a government is determined and measured by its ability to cope with the hardships that the country is going through, to face the upheavals that shake it and to manage the end of crises. As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to rage and fuel much political and economic turmoil, a new scourge is crashing down on the world: Vaccine nationalism.

The crisis of the new Coronavirus is exacerbating the tensions between the United States and China, thus foreshadowing a war without guns, in which the stakes are neither territorial nor ideological, but economic. Having adopted a vehement attitude towards China, well before this crisis, the tenant of the White House has brandished the threat of economic sanctions against China and is pushing towards its isolation on the international scene in order to contain its influence. In cont ...

On February 18, 2020, a few weeks before COVID-19 became the number one concern for politicians and the public, Emmanuel Macron delivered a long-awaited speech in Mulhouse in which he emphasized the importance of fighting what he called “Islamist separatism”. Many analysts were surprised by this declaration which differed from previous statements he’d made, following his election, about the need to institutionalize Islam. This policy brief explores the background to the institutiona ...

During the medal ceremony at the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City on October 16, 1968, two Black American athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, each raised a gloved fist during the playing of the U.S. national anthem. The two Americans received their medals shoeless, but wearing black socks to represent black poverty. Smith wore a black scarf around his neck to present black pride. Carlos, who won a bronze medal, wore a necklace of beads, which he said “were for those individuals th ...
