AFRICAFE: Africa and the New International Financial Architecture

October 12, 2023

The African continent has long been a focal point for discussions surrounding economic development, global finance, and international cooperation. With the ever-changing global economic landscape and the emergence of new financial paradigms, it is imperative to explore how Africa positions itself within this shifting framework. During this episode, we will unpack the evolution of international financial architecture to gain a comprehensive understanding of how the international financial system has evolved over the years and the implications of these changes for African nations. With the relocation of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Annual meetings to Africa in 2023, we will explore the continent’s role in shaping international financial governance, from its participation in international organizations to advocating for reforms in international financial institutions.

This episode will feature a key expert with extensive experience in international finance, and global economic governance to gain valuable insights into the complex relationship between Africa and the evolving international financial architecture and explore potential strategies for fostering economic growth, stability, and sustainability on the continent.

The development pathway of Beijing is interesting to study as it proves that a country can take its destiny in its own hand. This paper tries to draw possible lessons from the Chinese development path to see if some of them could be adaptable to feed the development of the African countries.

On the eve of Britain’s exit from the European Union, the country is redefining its international approach. The United Kingdom has already taken action by becoming involved in new economic commitments, new trade agreements in Commonwealth countries but also from a diplomatic point of view in West Africa. While development aid remains a focal point of its intervention in Africa, it risks being undermined by the Brexit and its economic consequences. However, the United Kingdom is now ...

The trade tensions between the United States and China will cause only minor immediate damage to their giant economies. However, tariffs have important and diverse effects on individual sectors and cause heightened uncertainty. The main adverse effects on Sub-Saharan Africa will therefore be through global investor confidence, economic growth and commodity prices, and these effects could be severe if the dispute escalates further and endangers the rules-based trading system. The tra ...

In a globalized world, the ability of countries to innovate is crucial to creating high levels of value added and enhancing economic competitiveness. Silicon Valley, USA, is a development model that many African countries seek to emulate by creating «African Valleys». The success of major US corporations has persuaded a great number of players that new technologies are essential drivers of growth, and several states have implemented policies to stimulate the development of start-ups ...

Nowadays, links between development and security are widely recognized by many, just as they were during the development of the Marshall Plan. As mentioned in the United Nations "A More Secure World" report, threats to one are intrinsically a threat to all. Thus, 17 UN-agreed goals were agreed upon to help end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030, including goal 16 for "peaceful and inclusive societies". Last month, the UN’s inaugural Africa Dialogue S ...
