Egypt- Israel: Aiming for Rapprochment
Authors
February 5, 2019

This Policy Brief attempts to analyze the rapprochement between Egypt and Israel in the context of geopolitical changes  in the region. The analysis is divided into two parts with the aim of demonstrating the bases of rapprochement. The first part looks at the rapprochement around important discoveries of gas in the Mediterranean and the second part is about the military cooperation between the two countries in Sinai. More broadly, this Policy Brief contextualizes this relationship in a broader historical and geopolitical context: that of the evolution of geopolitical rivalries in the Middle East.

In 1999, Hugo Chávez won the presidential elections in Venezuela with 56% of the votes, starting the historical period known as the “Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela”.  Helped with the rise of oil prices, a true social revolution started, with a new constitution and the implementation of socialist policies. Millions of people left poverty and became members of an increasing middle class, gaining access to housing, food, health, and education.  When Chávez died in 2013, his Vice-Pr ...

“WIR SCHAFFEN DAS,” OR DRAGON BLOOD AND TOUGH SKIN She is modest. Powerful. Thoughtful. The most influential politician of Europe, no, in the world, as US magazine Time stated in a cover story, declaring the German as “person of the year” — in 2015. Often this powerful woman does her grocery shopping without a bodyguard, and only really dresses up for one annual gala, the Wagner-festival in Bayreuth. She enjoys opera, a sharp contrast to her speeches. Richard Wagner, the composer i ...

The situation in Mali continues to evolve and is making MINUSMA’s task further challenging. Civilians in northern and central Mali continue to suffer from protection issues. In fact, since June 2018, at least 287 civilians have been killed by extremist groups or have been victims of acts of atrocities from rival communities, the highest number recorded since the deployment of MINUSMA.1 MINUSMA earned its name of being the most dangerous UN mission in the world due to lack of suffici ...

A NATION CRAVING TO RETURN TO GREATNESS It was yet another turbulent episode reflecting the dark sides of politics and secret service conspiracies. Murder is the message. “Do not mess with us.” The killers wore turbans and spoke Arabic. What else is new? It was dark, not a good time to drive on a hellhole of a road in the Central African Republic, one of the poorest nations of the world. So poor that death has no price. Not many streets are paved and streetlights are as frequent as ...
