Building Earthquake Resilience: Lessons learnt from Chile's experience - In Spanish

March 12, 2024

In this interview with Ms. Laura Albornoz, Director, National Oil Company of Chile ,we discussed Chile’s approach in handling natural disasters, particularly earthquakes. Ms. Albornoz highlights the importance of adapting construction practices, improving disaster prevention systems, and the concept of "human reconstruction" which addresses the psychological and social impacts on communities. The discussion emphasizes the lessons learned from significant earthquakes, including the 8.8 magnitude quake in 2010, and the need for continuous investment in emergency response capabilities. Ms. Albornoz highlights the necessity of implementing a multidimensional approach to achieve successful disaster management, while also emphasizing the importance of community education and preparedness.

Almost 25 years have passed since the fourth world conference on women in Beijing in 1995. At that time, governments and women’s rights organizations adopted the Beijing Platform for Action to advance women’s rights globally. In November 2019, I attended the Paris Peace Forum panel discussion on ‘how to make the Generation Equality Forum of May-July 2020 a transformational moment’. Also in 2019, France and Mexico agreed to host the Generation Equality Forum in 2020. This Forum, conv ...

This essay aims first to place post-structural feminism –as an intellectual current- within the theoretical debates of security studies, challenging mainstream approaches by including gender as a challenging concept. Analysis done by post-structuralism scholars has shown that language is ontologically significant, that the intelligible world is a social construct, and that there is no objective or true meaning of something. Post-structural feminism introduces the concept of gender t ...

When I think about women’s empowerment, I see it as a constant process of attaining milestones in our lives as individuals man and woman, and as society. When I think of women’s empowerment in the context of Morocco, a host of questions come to mind. First, how is the ‘Moroccan woman’? In other words, to what extent are Moroccan women seeking to empower themselves? Does empowerment, mean the same thing to every Moroccan woman? To what extent is it self-empowerment? And what are the ...

Epidemics are hardly a novelty. They have been shaping, mapping, and fundamentally altering human history from time immemorial. Exposing national vulnerabilities and feeding off poverty and insecurity, diseases have consistently threatened human and homeland security. Paradoxically, while globalization has helped concentrate global scientific efforts and disseminate ever more rapidly technologies and knowledge production, it has also significantly increased global interconnectednes ...

The outbreak in China has already affected economic sectors in Latin America. Is there more to come? China’s economy has come to a sudden stop. Large parts of the country remain in shutdown mode after the end of the Lunar New Year holiday, with national passenger traffic declining by 85% on the Wednesday after the break compared to 2019.   Outside of China, the impact of the slowdown has already been felt, with companies like Apple and Land Rover warning of lower production, as pa ...
