The internet of Things as a disruptive technology of the day and trend brings in a huge sense of connectivity and interaction not only between objects or devices, but also the workforce within institutions to amplify efficiency and productivity. This paper provides insights and perspectives of how institutions can bridge the digital divide with upskilling strategies which unlock an expert IoT workforce. Particularly, it focuses on AUDA – NEPAD scope of work areas such as Economic Integration, Human Capital and Institutional Development, Digitalization, Science, and Technology, Smart Industrialization and Environment Sustainability by elucidating how IoT can positively influence these aspects and vice versa for the benefit of the workforce and institutions in Africa. Moreover, it offers recommendations to AUDA – NEPAD on how it can play a leading role in IoT embracement in Africa to address the issues previously mentioned and foster industrialization in the continent. It highlights that regardless of the IoT’s benefits, the impact is highly felt only by the urban-based workforce, neglecting the rural-based workforce, who are the majority population in Africa. It concludes that there is a need for the public and private sector to invest in the Internet of Things (IoT) in both rural and urban African areas for the purpose of not only minimizing unemployment, attracting investment in IoT to retain staff, but also to keep the workforce up to date by bridging the digital divide.

Access to electricity is a key factor for the future of the African continent. Energy poverty and lack of universal access to electricity services are, in fact, remarkably hurting human progress in Africa. Today, sub-Saharan Africa hosts 14 percent of the world’s population but 60 percent of the world’s people without access to electricity: of the more than 1 billion people globally who had no access to electricity, around 600 million lived in the region. In these conditions, many A ...

Nowadays, links between development and security are widely recognized by many, just as they were during the development of the Marshall Plan. As mentioned in the United Nations "A More Secure World" report, threats to one are intrinsically a threat to all. Thus, 17 UN-agreed goals were agreed upon to help end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030, including goal 16 for "peaceful and inclusive societies". Last month, the UN’s inaugural Africa Dialogue S ...

What are the best ways forward to enhance the capacity, increase the impact, and ensure the long term viability of think tanks in Africa? These questions have been debated during the 2nd edition of African Think Tank Summit (ATTS) held in Rabat from May 9th to May 11th.  The African think tanks have positively evolved over the years in order to respond to the specific needs of their different countries. The recently signed African Continental Free Trade Agreement represents a countercurrent to protectionist tendencies across the Atlantic and the Pacific, and may well move the economic integration of the African continent forward. Translating the vision into action, however, will call upon signatories to undertake deeper domestic reforms and to confront specific challenges related to the agreement itself. This brief explains why the agreement is important for Africa and identifies p ...
