India’s Foreign Policy

18
December 2014
Dhruva Jaishankar

This podcast is performed by Dhruva Jaishankar. India has had several stages to its foreign policy since its independence. This included active international engagements in the 1950s, isolations and regional rivalries in the 1960s, closer cooperation with the Soviet Union in the 1970s, and gradually closer relations with the United States beginning in the late 1990s. Today, India’s foreign policy can be characterized primarily by a quest for security, for economic development, and for autonomy of action. India also seeks greater influence in multilateral forums, whether the United Nations, BRICS, or G20. The three most important bilateral relationships are with the United States, Pakistan, and China. Relations with important smaller actors (Singapore, Israel, and South Korea), complex ties in the Middle East (with Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Israel), and major secondary powers (Japan, Europe, Australia, Brazil, Russia). New trends are radically changing India’s international engagements. New priorities include sourcing foreign direct investment and utilizing India’s large and wealthy diaspora. This also means that new actors - including businesses, NGOs, and the media - are influencing foreign policy in novel ways.

This paper suggests that tribal dynamics of power structure are key in reestablishing peace and development in the region. The Sahel region’s security challenges are directly influenced by tribalism and ethnic dynamics. In recent decades mistreatment, favoritism, and corruption allowed criminality and multidimensional conflicts to flourish. This is evident in Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Libya, and Chad. Lightly governed and poorly secured regions in these countries became more strate ...

Massive and sometimes violent protests have been setting the pace in Hong Kong for over 100 days. Demonstrators have put forward five demands, amongst which a democratic system of local rule, not controlled by Beijing.  Below is an international press review of the Hong Kong political crisis by Helmut Sorge, former Foreign editor, and Middle East expert for Germany's leading newsmagazine "Der Spiegel", and columnist at the Policy Center for the New South.    Ta Kung Pao, a Hong Kon ...

There is no doubt that China's 70th Anniversary celebration was the display of a new world superpower. From the military parade to the issuance of a paper reporting China's role in the New Era, it is clear that the country, whose current political system was established on 1 October 1949, is much different, more assertive and with a clear perspective of the role it wants to play in the international scenario. Everywhere in Beijing, the Chinese National Anthem was played, reminding t ...

True to the ambition and spirit of its inaugural edition (2017), then entitled ‘’Mirror of Africa,’’ the «Annual Report on Africa’s Geopolitics», under its new name, explores new horizons, with a view to better grasping the dynamics at play on the continent. This is reflected in particular in the three-part structure of the Report. In Part I (Regions), Africa is broken down into its diverse geographical areas, with a focus on the continent’s various regional economic communities. E ...
