India’s Foreign Policy

18
December 2014
Dhruva Jaishankar

This podcast is performed by Dhruva Jaishankar. India has had several stages to its foreign policy since its independence. This included active international engagements in the 1950s, isolations and regional rivalries in the 1960s, closer cooperation with the Soviet Union in the 1970s, and gradually closer relations with the United States beginning in the late 1990s. Today, India’s foreign policy can be characterized primarily by a quest for security, for economic development, and for autonomy of action. India also seeks greater influence in multilateral forums, whether the United Nations, BRICS, or G20. The three most important bilateral relationships are with the United States, Pakistan, and China. Relations with important smaller actors (Singapore, Israel, and South Korea), complex ties in the Middle East (with Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Israel), and major secondary powers (Japan, Europe, Australia, Brazil, Russia). New trends are radically changing India’s international engagements. New priorities include sourcing foreign direct investment and utilizing India’s large and wealthy diaspora. This also means that new actors - including businesses, NGOs, and the media - are influencing foreign policy in novel ways.

On the evening of August 15, the Kenyan Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared William Ruto, the vice-president of the outgoing government, as winner of the presidential race. The announcement was not made in a situation of calm, as political unrest and turbulence erupted a few moments before Wafula Chebukati, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, announced the winner’s name. For the first time since it was established by the Constitution in 2011, the me ...

In May 2021, the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) report Net Zero by 2050 stated that there is no need for new investments in oil and gas fields in their net zero pathway[1]. The message was clear: place your next investments in clean energy sources and energy efficiency. However, the IEA’s Africa Energy Outlook 2022 stated that Africa’s industrialisation relies in expanding the use of natural gas[2]. Even the IEA executive director Fatih Birol said, “if we make a list of the top ...

Kenyans headed to the polls on August 9 to elect their fifth president, along with county governors, members of the Senate, and National Assembly representatives. The elections took place in a context of growing challenges of rising commodity prices, and the recent developments over the maritime dispute in which the International Court of Justice ruled in favor of Somalia. Sleepless nights and the tireless search for compromise allowed WTO members to agree on concrete deliverables during the WTO 12th Ministerial Conference held last June. Those results reinforce Multilateralism. And this is a significant gain given the multiplicity of global crises that surround us. The Outcome include 6 Agreements, Declarations and Ministerial Decisions that respond to some of today's challenges, notably on Fisheries and Ocean Sustainability as well as responses to P ...
