Session 1: Challenges of Monetary Policy: Navigating Inflation Dynamics in the Face of Supply Shocks

The confluence of COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has resulted in a surge of inflation not seen for decades. Developing countries, especially in Africa, are bearing the brunt of this complex economic landscape, characterized by a sluggish recovery, rising unemployment and poverty rates, tight international financing conditions, soaring public debt, and persistent inflationary pressures. Central banks in Africa are facing the challenge of balancing the need to support economic growth with the need to prevent inflation from spiraling out of control. This session will explore the complex and interrelated issues surrounding monetary policy in Africa and the strategies that central banks can employ to navigate inflation dynamics in the face of supply shocks. As such, this session will address the following questions: - How can African central banks adapt their monetary policy frameworks and tools to effectively address supply shocks? - How can African central banks effectively manage the tradeoff between inflation and growth in the current environment? - What are the potential long-term effects of the current wave of monetary policy tightening in Africa? - What policy mix frameworks could be used to address macroeconomic imbalances in African economies, and how can they be tailored to the unique characteristics of these countries?

Chair: Mehdi Bartal, Professor, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (Morocco)

The discussion on industry 4.0 (also often referred to as smart manufacturing or industrial internet of things – which is the term mostly used in the United States of America) has graduated from being a niche topic discussed (and implemented) by engineers in the world’s richest economies. If industry 4.0 has not physically arrived everywhere, it is at least in the minds of some: industry 4.0 in Africa, ...

Africa is an economic region which holds great potential despite the risks associated with its development. Indeed, many experts agree that Africa is emerging as the new frontier for global growth. Boosted by its abundant natural resources, a young and vibrant population, strong urbanization, more stable macroeconomic conditions, more stringent economic policies, a constantly improving business climate and improving governance, Africa is on track for a structural transformation that ...

Despite considerable effort from the South African government to drive innovation, the investments to date have not reaped the fruits expected by both government and the private sector. I believe that if we are to realise ‘the new dawn’ in economic growth and transformation the state needs to reorganise itself to be an ‘entrepreneurial state’. This paper will proceed firstly by outlining current government action to support innovation, followed by a summary of the overarching recomm ...

The co-author, Bertrand Bio-Mama, is an alumnus of the Emerging Leaders Program 2017.

In a globalized world, the ability of countries to innovate is crucial to creating high levels of value added and enhancing economic competitiveness. Silicon Valley, USA, is a development model that many African countries seek to emulate by creating «African Valleys». The success of major US corporations has persuaded a great number of players that new technologies are essential drivers of growth, and several states have implemented policies to stimulate the development of start-ups ...

But now, it looks like technology itself could finally start to break down some of the barriers to entry and alter the socio-economic landscape beyond recognition. It could put women and under-represented minorities on the financial and technologi ...
