The role of civil society in the fight against Coronavirus: The fundamentals and social cohesion

May 7, 2020

In light of the quick spread of the coronavirus pandemic across the world, national governments are doubling efforts to respond effectively to this public health emergency. The human and financial resources at their disposal are increasingly put under strain by the exponential growth in number of confirmed cases. This situation undoubtedly calls on a burden sharing by all relevant stakeholders in order to offer adequate healthcare and vital services to the public. Under these special circumstances, it is crucial that governments, private sector and civil society organisations (CSO) work together to tackle the issue at hand efficiently. In this context, civil society can play a role of utmost importance in the fight against the current pandemic as it can contribute to a better appropriation of social distancing recommendations by the populations and accelerate the implementation on the ground of the different measures taken at the governmental level. Within this perspective, this webinar will address ways in which civil society can help governments drive an effective response to the COVID-19 health emergency, from communication measures to advocating for funds allocation.

This paper estimates the socioeconomic impacts of the emergence and expansion of e-hailing services in São Paulo, Brazil. Combining data from a major service provider, individual level data from a representative travel diary survey and a structural traffic network simulation, we evaluate the impact of e-hailing on commuters' travel time and accessibility. We then estimate the effect of these changes on workers' productivity. Finally, using a Spatial Computable General Equilibrium (S ...

Throughout my last 15 years working in multilateral institutions, many times around the world I was asked to speak about the success of poverty reduction in Brazil during the new millennium. Last week, someone who was on such an occasion in October 2013 in Nairobi asked me what my numbers had become after these recent years of precarious macroeconomic performance and high unemployment in the country. I replied that they have changed ... in part! Indeed, the fact that, even without ...

Reform and Opening-up profoundly altered the face of China. From an agricultural backwards country, which had suffered humiliation by Western powers and Japan in the 19thand early 20th century, to the largest economy in the world in Purchasing Power Parity terms, the Chinese saga for reinsertion into the global scene is not a miracle. It is the result of hard work, visionary leadership and the wise use of its most widely available commodity: its hard-working people. Of course, there ...

The author is an alumnus of the 2018 Atlantic Dialogues Emerging Leaders program Tech industries, despite leading the charge for change in many areas of modern life, have traditionally been one of the worst industries for gender equality. But now, it looks like technology itself could finally start to break down some of the barriers to entry and alter the socio-economic landscape beyond recognition. It could put women and under-represented minorities on the financial and technologi ...

« Blocages », « Crise politique », « émeutes », « révolution ». Jean-Luc Mélenchon, le député du parti La France insoumise, a parlé « d’une insurrection citoyenne » à propos des gilets jaunes. Comment peut-on définir, aujourd’hui, les auteurs de ce mouvement qui occupent les espaces publics ? Menacent-ils la démocratie ? Sont-ils aussi inédits que le prétendent la plupart des commentateurs ? Quelles seront les conséquences de ces manifestations sur la scène internationale ? Helmut ...

In 2019, the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos convened under the theme of “Globalization 4.0”, highlighting the need for a renewed global governance system that will leave no one behind. The perspectives of civil society were crucial to make the meeting meaningful and inclusive. My role as Acting Head of Civil Society Communities is to ensure leaders from NGOs, unions, faith-based organizations and religious groups leverage the Forum platform to advocate for sustainable ...
