Private Capital and Climate Challenges with Rakan Aboneaaj – ADEL 2023

January 18, 2023

In recent years, and in light of the mounting challenges associated with the effects of climate change on communities worldwide, discussions have ramped up on the necessity to crowd in private money to meet the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and mitigate environmental challenges to livelihoods. In this discussion, Rakan Aboneaaj, Research Associate at the Center for Global Development and member of the ADEL 2023 cohort, highlights the main stakes of the mobilization of private capital to that effect.

We are embroiled in a global emergency that we, as a species, have not previously experienced. This menace is responsible for massive numbers of premature deaths and, if left untreated, could forever threaten our global security. Misinformation about the cause and how best to address it, has been pervasive. If you thought I was referring to COVID-19, you would be wrong. Rather, I am speaking about something far more destructive: climate change. The World Health Organization (WHO) h ...

Policymakers across the world face a dilemma: to lockdown the economy, and see output and employment collapse, or to open and face a surge of COVID-19 infections and deaths that could overwhelm the medical system? The choice is especially stark in poor countries, where many depend on what they earn day to day, and where the medical system is entirely unequipped to deal with the virus. In this brief we assess the likely path and geographic spread of the epidemic. We do so by examinin ...

Environmentally sustainable development was the leading theme at the World Economic Forum in Davos in late January 2020. Just two months later, places including Wuhan in China, California’s Bay Area, and New York City experienced unusually blue skies and clean air as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. What has happened is unprecedented and has replaced, for now, the long-term climate change agenda with a short-term public health pandemic agenda as the foremost global urgency. H ...

2020 is an important year for the international climate agenda despite a general loss of momentum and resurgence of the divide between traditional polluters, emerging polluters, and the most vulnerable countries. While African countries only contribute to 4% of global GHG emissions, their capacity to adapt to climate change’s devastating impact on societies, livelihoods, economies, and ecosystems is limited. This paper provides a synthesis of the existing literature and recent devel ...

The future of our environment, ecology and biodiversity raises a number of questions. Vigilance is critical to preseving both Morocco and the planet for future generations.
