Brazil and South Korea: Two Tales Of a Middle-Income Trap

June 9, 2021

The middle-income trap may well characterize the experience of Brazil and most of Latin America since the 1980s. Conversely, South Korea maintained its pace of evolution, reaching a high-income status. Such divergence of economic growth can be related to their distinctive performances of domestic accumulation of technological and organizational capabilities. Their different approaches to global value chains and trade globalization reinforced such discrepancy in domestic accumulation processes.

The Multidimensional Poverty Index provided for the UNDP (United Nations Developed Program) looks beyond monetary income and shows how poverty is the experience of multiple and simultaneous deprivations. People can fall behind in terms of health, education, and living standards, with challenges including lack of access to drinking water, sanitation, adequate nutrition, or primary education. Those who are deprived of at least one third of the index’s components are classified as mult ...

The COVID-19 disease, caused by the novel coronavirus, is the most serious health crisis since the Spanish flu of 1918, which is estimated to have killed between 50 million and 100 million people worldwide. By the latest count (March 29), the disease had spread to over 177 countries, with more than 630,000 cases reported and 30,000 recorded deaths. These numbers are increasing exponentially at present and the cases and deaths reported are both believed to be undercounted. Deaths are ...

Illicit financial flows (IFFs) have become a serious threat to the attainment of global development goals. On February 28th, 2020, the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, and the President of ECOSOC, Mona Juul, have announced a high-level panel on international financial accountability, transparency, and integrity (FACTI) as a means to address this challenge, which inhibits financing for the Sustainable Development Goals.

A feeling of collective insanity has overtaken the world since the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-2019) emerged in Wuhan, China. The virus—more lethal than influenza—was initially treated lightly by the West. This approach showed the lack of preparedness of many countries in dealing with the epidemics we are currently facing. Instead of implementing immediate measures to deal with the challenges imposed, some political and business leaders started labeling COVID-19 as the Chinese v ...

On February 20-21, the Heads of State or Government of the European Union began the last phase of negotiation of the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027, the Union’s seven-year budget. Although that European Council made little progress—a long tradition at this stage of negotiations within the EU—discussions focused on the proposed reductions in structural funds and the funds to support the Common Agricultural Policy, and the resulting net balance of funds for each of the ...

The Service sector is central to economic growth, trade and employment across the world. Trade in services has increased from 8.5 per cent of global GDP in 1995 to 13.1 per cent of GDP in 2017. However, Africa is taking less advantage of these opportunities than others. In this policy brief we highlight important misconceptions that may be holding back services exports in Africa. The potential for services sector growth and services exports from low levels in Africa is large. Polici ...
