11th Edition of the Atlantic Dialogues Conference - DAY 1

December 14, 2022

In this mutating world, pressures on States’ stability have increased with war, pandemics and natural disasters, shaking the international system to the core. The resurgence of war in Europe has reshuffled the cards of world geopolitics. Energy shortages, inflation, amplification of populist narratives and an overall fragmentation are all exacerbated in a world recovering from a global pandemic.

The African continent and the Global South are particularly suffering from the slow restart of the post-pandemic economy and the ongoing conflicts in the West with far-reaching implications and repercussions. As exposed witnesses of the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine and of the ever-growing discordance between the United States and China, and as a region standing to be the most impacted by the compounded crises, states in the Global South are reviving the nonaligned movement. Are they in a position to advance their own views and secure their interests? In the aftermath of a pandemic and in the midst of War, the Global South could contribute to policy prescriptions regarding how to best to navigate the turbulence ahead. How can the Global South manage and mitigate worse effects, and turn the current crisis into an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversation around collaborative North-South efforts aimed at action, genuine partnerships, and cooperation?

Stakes are high. Cooperation on the global, regional, state and individual levels is the only way to cope and overcome these unprecedented challenges. As advocates for the Global South, the implementation of an enhanced and effective multilateral world order is one of the compasses that leads our action. The Atlantic Dialogues conference has always channeled this strong willingness of increased and reformed multilateralism by creating innovative spaces of dialogue between the North and South Atlantic. This conference is the opportunity to conceptualize the wider Atlantic and advocates for innovative and bold ideas for a peaceful, more balanced and prosperous future.

This policy brief (PB), prepared for the G-20 Working Group on Trade, aims to provide decision-makers with a succinct review of the state of the trading system, to point to likely scenarios, and to serve as a background to or reference for the other six PBs prepared by the T20 Task Force on Trade, Investment and Globalization. The brief argues that the world trading system has been remarkably successful in many respects but that the present strain reflects causes which are deep-seat ...

Adopting an integrated approach to the management and governance of natural resources including land, water and energy is seen as an effective way to improve the sphere of production while respecting the environment. Fatima Ezzahra Mengoub, economist at the Policy Center for the New South, was invited by Stockholm Environment Institute, alongside other prestigious research centers with expertise in environmental studies, to co-author this research paper and share her analysis of th ...

« Anything in this very interesting world is possible, but I believe that Kim Jong –un fully realizes the great economic potential of North Korea &will do nothing to interfere or end it .He also knows that I am with him &does not want to break his promise to me. A deal will happen. » (Donald Trump, twitter, 3.42 pm, may 4, 2019) The hat was black and already fashionable during murderous days of Adolf Hitler, Nazi-Germany’s dictator. The bizarre leader of North Korea had to ...

In Japan, the new Emperor Naruhito 徳仁 was inaugurated last week as a successor to his father Emperor Akihito明仁, who decided to abdicate about two years ago in favour of his son for health reasons. The Japanese people have welcomed the event with mixed feelings, the joy of the enthronement of the young emperor Emperor Naruhito, mixed with despair for missing the warmth and sympathy of Emperor Akihito, whose popularity with the Empress Michiko was characterized by being the couple wh ...

Reform and Opening-up profoundly altered the face of China. From an agricultural backwards country, which had suffered humiliation by Western powers and Japan in the 19thand early 20th century, to the largest economy in the world in Purchasing Power Parity terms, the Chinese saga for reinsertion into the global scene is not a miracle. It is the result of hard work, visionary leadership and the wise use of its most widely available commodity: its hard-working people. Of course, there ...
