In February 2023, Türkiye’s south and Syria’s north experienced a series of devastating earthquakes, the death toll of which reached about 60 000 people. In spite of the relative economic weight of Türkiye (11th nominal GDP worldwide in purchasing power parity), of a long history of devastating earthquakes, and of the existence of institutions dedicated to fighting such catastrophic events, the response to the seism first appeared to be hesitant and undecisive, before gradually improving. Since the earthquake, Türkiye has also invested considerable efforts and resources to ensure a return to normal life in affected regions. This episode with Mr. Mehmet Öğütçü, CEO, Global Resources Partnership will be dedicated to a review of how Türkiye has navigated the massive shock on its economy and society that the earthquake brought to it, from immediate response to reconstruction.
