Regional Integration: Can it Bring More Independence to Africa?
Authors

Although there is no single way to understand regional integration, it is considered beneficial in all its forms. It is commonly accepted that countries that are better integrated into their regional space are more likely to benefit from their anchorage. Regional integration can take many forms and be applied in different ways. In Africa, regional economic integration, which takes place mainly through trade relations, is the most widespread model. This model of integration is often concluded between two or more countries with the aim of forming a trade bloc and increasing trade flows at the regional level through the liberalization of trade relations between the countries involved. In general, economic theories distinguish two groups of factors explaining why countries engage in trade relations. The first explanation, which forms the basis of trade theory, suggests that differences in factors of production lead to trade based on comparative advantage that benefits all parties. The second explanation emphasizes the importance of economies of scale in production. According to this theory, by exchanging products of the same nature but with production differences, one can benefit. Also according to this theory, advanced regional integration, even if it only brings together countries at the same level of development, still leads to gains in terms of trade between their industries.

Access to electricity is a key factor for the future of the African continent. Energy poverty and lack of universal access to electricity services are, in fact, remarkably hurting human progress in Africa. Today, sub-Saharan Africa hosts 14 percent of the world’s population but 60 percent of the world’s people without access to electricity: of the more than 1 billion people globally who had no access to electricity, around 600 million lived in the region. In these conditions, many A ...

Nowadays, links between development and security are widely recognized by many, just as they were during the development of the Marshall Plan. As mentioned in the United Nations "A More Secure World" report, threats to one are intrinsically a threat to all. Thus, 17 UN-agreed goals were agreed upon to help end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030, including goal 16 for "peaceful and inclusive societies". Last month, the UN’s inaugural Africa Dialogue S ...

The recently signed African Continental Free Trade Agreement represents a countercurrent to protectionist tendencies across the Atlantic and the Pacific, and may well move the economic integration of the African continent forward. Translating the vision into action, however, will call upon signatories to undertake deeper domestic reforms and to confront specific challenges related to the agreement itself. This brief explains why the agreement is important for Africa and identifies p ...
