ATLANTIC CURRENTS 2nd Edition: An Annual Report on Wider Atlantic Perspectives and Patterns
Authors
October 28, 2015

OCP Policy Center and the German Marshall Fund are pleased to present this second edition of Atlantic Currents, an annual report charting wider Atlantic patterns and perspectives. The report is the result of a close collaboration between The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) and OCP Policy Center, and is a companion to the Atlantic Dialogues, our annual forum in Morocco. Both activities are part of a multi-year partnership to promote dialogue and analysis on issues affecting the wider Atlantic — Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, and the United States — as well as global stakeholders in Atlantic affairs.

GMF and OCP Policy Center are proud of the role we have played in extending the transatlantic debate to embrace the Atlantic Basin, north and south, and in stimulating new thinking about “Atlanticism” for the 21st century — rethinking mental maps of the Atlantic in economic, political, and security terms. This year, we have devoted special attention to Africa, and African perspectives in Atlantic context, alongside issues and data we plan to track from year to year. We wish to thank all the authors who have contributed to this edition of Atlantic Currents as well as the dedicated staff at GMF and OCP Policy Center who made it possible. Comments on Atlantic Currents are most welcome, and may be addressed to the editors at GMF and OCP Policy Center.

Social media is increasingly used by oppressed and helpless communities as a voice to create change and increase awareness about social injustice. In this paper, we study the Black Lives Matter movement, one of the fastest-growing social movements in the United States, through the Twitter lens by collecting around 600,000 tweets with both the #BlackLivesMatter and #BLM hashtags, published from March to July 2020. Our study shows that this movement has received unprecedented attentio ...

We estimate the contents of services value-added incorporated in goods exports in different countries in Latin America, exploring the local dimension of the results. We use inter-regional input-output analysis to trace and map domestic value-added embedded in those countries’ exports. We add to the discussion of global value chains the internal, withincountry geography of trade in value-added, since the set of locational preferences that help understanding the spatial patterns of na ...

War has started again in the Caucasus, a region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea consisting of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and parts of Southern Russia. It is a kind of mountainous border between Asia and Europe, in a region with vast oil resources that was conquered by Russia a few hundred years ago. The fighting that has erupted is over an enclave known as Nagorno-Karabakh, a remote territory without strategic value that is nevertheless, as writer Andrew Higgins conclud ...

We have previously discussed how, between March 2020, when the financial shock caused by COVID-19 occurred, and the end of August, the stock and corporate debt markets in the United States performed extraordinarily, despite gloomy prospects on the real side of the economy. The decline in technology stock prices in September ended up taking the equivalent of a month from gains starting in April, but prices remain high. On the basis of such a ‘disconnect from reality’ in financial ma ...

“Your environment, an opportunity for skills” Born in Kenya, Vicky Ngari reluctantly followed her mother in the United Kingdom when she was 10.
