Symposium - The State Of Foresight Studies in the World

May 26, 2023

The Policy Center for the New South (PCNS), the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University are co-organizing “the State of Foresight Studies in the World” conference and workshop sessions on May 26 and 27, 2023 at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Rabat.

The world is undergoing a major demographic boom. Projections state that global population will reach 9.7 billion people in 2050, with population growth almost coming to an end at 10.4 billion in 2100 . This growth represents a considerable heavy trend that requires different actors and stakeholders to think about the future strategically. Indeed, the global landscape is becoming increasingly complex and dynamic, exposing decision-makers to a remarkably higher level of uncertainty and complexity. With this context in mind, it is crucial for all actors within the international community to emphasize on the importance of anticipating and understanding change in order to ensure proper policy implementation through strategic decision-making.

This conference will rely on an inclusive and participatory approach, in order to involve the largest number of Foresight centers and institutes across the world. This initiative will include a High-level conference during the first day, as well as workshop sessions during the second day, to discuss in depth the state of Foresight studies in the world, alongside networking sessions.

“WIR SCHAFFEN DAS,” OR DRAGON BLOOD AND TOUGH SKIN She is modest. Powerful. Thoughtful. The most influential politician of Europe, no, in the world, as US magazine Time stated in a cover story, declaring the German as “person of the year” — in 2015. Often this powerful woman does her grocery shopping without a bodyguard, and only really dresses up for one annual gala, the Wagner-festival in Bayreuth. She enjoys opera, a sharp contrast to her speeches. Richard Wagner, the composer i ...

The situation in Mali continues to evolve and is making MINUSMA’s task further challenging. Civilians in northern and central Mali continue to suffer from protection issues. In fact, since June 2018, at least 287 civilians have been killed by extremist groups or have been victims of acts of atrocities from rival communities, the highest number recorded since the deployment of MINUSMA.1 MINUSMA earned its name of being the most dangerous UN mission in the world due to lack of suffici ...

Scholars of social movements and global protest have long neglected social movements in Africa, ostensibly because African societies are too rural, too tradition- or ethnicity-bound, or lacking advanced class formations. Those who have broached the topic tend to focus on South Africa’s labor movement and anti-apartheid struggle. Even less addressed is how social movements in various parts of the continent have affected each other. A continent-wide approach however shows that protest ...

Islamic finance is a way of doing finance while respecting the Islamic ban on interest-based transactions and ensuring risk sharing between parties in all operations. Contracts are supposed to rule out features that would make them akin to gambling or “making money from money.” Furthermore, engagements in businesses considered immoral or ethically problematic are not allowed. Islamic finance therefore means, among other features: no pure debt securities, with interest replaced by t ...

There has been a flurry of activity in the Horn of Africa recently, where decades-old political disputes have suddenly been put to rest. The resulting changes have shattered the status quo in the region, putting the Horn on a new path where state-to-state relations are no longer marked by regional competition and frozen borders. While this has undoubtedly been a positive development for the region, one big piece of the puzzle has been the role of external actors in the process, and ...
