Earlier last year, I was asked the question: “Can you provide an example of a South-South cooperation.” While I had some examples in mind, they were limited compared to South-North cooperation. This motivated me to learn more about the implications between states in the Southern hemisphere; leading me to apply for the Atlantic Dialogues Emerging Leaders (ADEL) program – an outstanding network that brings together 30 brilliant leaders from the Atlantic basin and Africa selected from a pool of 1,400 applications.
To say that ADEL left an indelible mark in my life is an understatement. The mission of the Policy Center for the New South made me believe that it is possible to integrate voices and perspectives, which are often left in the margins.
The talk on intersectionality resonated deeply with me, emphasizing the importance of formulating policies that genuinely understand the individuals in their own complexity and web of identities. The discussion urged a departure from traditional, one-size-fits-all policy recommendations, stressing the need to integrate the multifaceted nature of individuals. This perspective struck a chord with me as it made me ponder on policy effectiveness and reinvigorated my commitment to a more holistic and inclusive approach to policy advocacy in Peru and beyond.
