The Policy Center for the New South (PCNS), in partnership with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Ethiopia and the African Union Office, is hosting a one-day event on April 29th titled "Migration Trends and Mobility in Africa – In Between Freedom of Movement of People and Protectionism." This initiative seeks to unpack the complexities of migration patterns within Africa, emphasizing their role in achieving the African Union Agenda 2063.

While migration has often been portrayed as a security threat or leverage tool in global narratives, it is central to economic integration and development across the continent. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) underscores the importance of facilitating the free movement of people. Yet, barriers such as strict visa regimes, limited diplomatic presence, and weak connectivity persist, hindering progress. As a transit and destination hub for migration flows between Europe and Africa, Morocco provides unique insights into these dynamics.

Taking place on April 29th, this event will convene experts from Morocco and across Africa to examine migration trends, focusing on regular migration and its socio-economic impacts. Discussions will explore how the AfCFTA influences labor migration, identifying opportunities and challenges for workers and businesses. By fostering dialogue within the African Union framework, the event aims to discuss recommendations that enhance the benefits of labor migration under the AfCFTA.

Conducted in English and French, the program will feature expert presentations and interactive panel discussions. It offers an opportunity to deepen understanding of the interplay between freedom of movement and protectionism, aligning policies with the aspirations of the African Union Agenda 2063.
