Transatlantic Relations and dynamics between North and South in a Changing World

January 19, 2024

2024 will be the most important electoral year on record. While elections will be held in major countries of the South (including India, Indonesia, and South Africa, among others) and in Russia, the North Atlantic will also be home to noticeable contests. The U.S. and the EU have witnessed a surge in right-wing populism. How both powerhouses will fare in front of that challenge to liberal democracy as it was traditionally understood, and how it will shape their foreign policy and engagement with the rest of the world, are the topics of this conversation with Strahinja Matejic, Associate Director in the Office of the President at the Eurasia Group, and member of the ADEL 2022 cohort.

In 1980, the establishment of the Mujahideen contingent in Afghanistan to fight against the Soviet occupation opened the door to the globalization of jihadism, which until then had been confined to local and national dimensions. With the United States’ invasion of Iraq, international terrorism took another dimension that culminated in 2014 with the birth of the "Islamic State", also known as Daech. Ch ...

Ethiopia is located at the heart of the Horn of Africa. Torn between its position within the Greater Middle East (Culcasi 2008, 128 and Fukuyama 2008, 206) from one side, and Sub Saharan Africa on the other, this East African state is landlocked in a region marked by intense and long-standing political strife and conflicts, and is directly exposed to regional insecurity and political volatility. Against this unstable background, successive regimes and governments in Addis Ababa have ...

Emerging economies started playing a more predominant role in the international agenda. Finance and defence, which were the major determinants of the global chessboard until the end of the Cold War, though still relevant, should give room to other essential elements to secure growth and prosperity. Energy security is of quintessential importance in this new world order. ...
