AD 2021: Reworking the Work Model

December 8, 2021

The rapidly evolving nature of our economies and societies accelerated by the COVID-19 crisis has brought a broader range of shifts in the way workplaces and workforces are organized. The advent of new technologies has radically transformed the way public and private organizations operates and manage their workforce. These changes are even more exacerbated by the ongoing impacts of the pandemic on the labor market that has reconfigured the employee-employer relationship. In this new work era, companies are seeking to maanage uncertainty, maintain the workforce’s productivity and enhance their competitiveness while embracing digital transformation. This will not only require the upskilling of workers but also the adoption of agile governance standards and redefining new workplace areas. This session will enlighten these trends that are challenging policymakers to put suitable frameworks for the new and alternative work models. What are the main imperatives for resetting the future of work agenda? How to embrace the integration of technology and skills to transform the workplace? Full-time, hybrid and homebased work: What implications for companies’ productivity and workforces’ wellbeing? What governance models to adopt in managing new workforces’ standards?

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has already completed two notable labors. First, he led his radical left-wing Syriza party to an improbable election victory in January 2015. Then, also improbably, he won a resounding no vote in a referendum on July 5 on accepting the terms of Greece’s international creditors for a new bailout package. According to Greek mythology, there are ten more labors to go, and indeed, it will probably take that many to redeem the Greek economy. Tsipras’s ...

The year just ending disappointed economic forecasters, as did the year prior, and the one before that. The aftereffects of the Lehman crisis, now over six years old, and of the subsequent sovereign crisis in Europe, have been systematically underestimated and continue to plague us.  Although the outlook for 2015 is foggier than usual, there are significant areas of strength and many signs that the world economy continues to heal, beginning from here in the United States.  The coll ...

The International Jobs Report offers an analysis of labor market conditions since the end of the 2008-09 global recession. It also provides forecasts of GDP and employment by the IMF and the International Labor Organization (and by a private-sector company, The Economist Intelligence Unit), to spur discussion and debate. Future editions will update and expand on this analysis, opening a window on to a global labor market that is improving, but not nearly fast enough to help the tens ...
